Today, Marie Newman, Democrat for Congress in Illinois’ 3rd District, announced that she had received the endorsement of the Brady Campaign.
“Brady is proud to endorse Marie Newman to represent Illinois’ Third District. She has been in this fight for over 20 years, as a volunteer for the Million Mom March in 2000, and she understands that our nation badly needs common-sense gun violence prevention reforms to keep our communities safe,” said Brady Campaign President Kris Brown. “Newman knows that we are all in this effort together and the Second Amendment and evidence-based firearm policies are far from mutually exclusive, it’s why she champions policies like universal background checks on all gun sales. We need Marie Newman’s voice in Congress.”
“Every day in America, 8 children are unintentionally shot in their homes by a family member and 16 women are shot and killed by a current or former partner. These statistics are appalling, and I fear that the spike in gun sales we are seeing due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic will make things worse,” said Marie Newman. “Now is the time for Washington to take the crisis of gun violence seriously, and I look forward to working with groups like the Brady Campaign to address the issue. I am honored to receive Brady’s endorsement and to join them in the fight to reduce gun violence 25% by 2025.”
Marie Newman is running for Congress to address the public health crisis of gun violence by fighting for common-sense reform like universal background checks for all gun sales, red flag laws, and reinstating the assault weapons ban.
